Case Description
I need major work done. 11 years ago, a dentist did root canals on two teeth, and a crown on one. 6 years ago, I had an abcess under the one with the crown/root canal, and was told by this different dentist that there was no indication any root canal was done on either tooth (insurance was charged for them, and I also paid my portion of it, over $1000 out of my pocket alone, so it would have been about $2000, as insurance paid approximately half). In the new dentist's doing the root canal, he had to drill through the crown, which was almost destroyed because a large hole was drilled through the back. I could not afford another crown then, and still do not have one, it remained in place for about 2 years, although getting looser until it came off. There are only 4 top teeth that may be fixable with extensive work, 10 if 6 are crowned. Lowers are better, one or two need root canal, and there are 10 lowers. I'm a chicken. I found a good dentist two years ago that did not hurt when he did some extractions, and mostly, he did not criticize. That is the biggest problem, that going to a dentist and them telling us how bad our teeth are (well, we know, they're in our mouths after all), is very embarrassing. My husband and I would like to find a dentist that will do the work, including the numbing injections, where we can feel comfortable. The one that did the painless extractions, first time, he did everything, told me that if it started to hurt when he gave the shot, he would stop, and at any point during all the work. Next time I went, the hygeniest or dental tech, not sure what her job was, came in to do the injection and told me that once she starts, she won't stop. And just when I was relaxed and comfortable with this dentist after going the first time!

When we are ready to get dental work done, which will hopefully be within the year, we want someone that will do the work, not have a hygeniest do the injections (no offense, we're just more comfortable having all the work done by the dentist), and someone that will not judge our current oral problems, only work to fix them. For me, growing up in a small town on the East Coast, there wasn't much choice of dentists, and the 3 within 20 miles weren't good, as the rest of my family would agree.

I do not know if implants would be better than a partial, and fix the rest with root canals and crowns. Any ideas?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.
